The Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth is designed to be read in publication order — there’s no alternate timeline or split narrative to worry about:

Watch the films in the same order as the books, since each adapts the corresponding novel (with increasing divergence from the source material as the series progresses):
Note that the planned two-part finale — which would have completed the story on screen — was never produced, so the film series is unfinished. Read our book vs. movie differences guide before or after watching to see where the adaptations diverge.
Should you read Four: A Divergent Collection?
Veronica Roth also published a companion volume of short stories told from Tobias “Four” Eaton’s perspective, covering his backstory before Divergent begins. It’s optional and best read after finishing the main trilogy, since it contains spoilers for later books.
