Is There a 4th Divergent Movie? (Ascendant Explained)
Why the series was never finished on screen
Allegiant (2016) covers only roughly the first half of Veronica Roth’s final novel. The plan was to split the rest of the story across a fourth film, Ascendant, mirroring the two-part finales popular in YA franchises at the time (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows).
Allegiant underperformed at the box office compared to its predecessors, and reports at the time indicated the studio considered moving Ascendant to television before ultimately shelving the project. It was never produced in any form.
Has anything changed since?
As of this writing, there’s been no official announcement reviving Ascendant or a reboot of the franchise. Cast members have moved on to other major roles (see our cast then and now piece), which makes a straightforward continuation with the original cast increasingly unlikely with each passing year — though franchise reboots are common enough in Hollywood that it isn’t impossible.
How to get the real ending
If you want to know how the story actually concludes, the only way is to read the final third of Roth’s Allegiant novel — see our ending explained breakdown for the full summary.
